Danny Vago has a new EP Way of Abilene, just released June 14. Following his move from Nebraska to North Carolina, Danny Vago (who performs as Vago both solo and with a full band) offers this EP as a way of his introduction to his new music community in NC. Also it’s just a cool collection of songs Danny had ready to share. His recent release What Can’t I Do is an electric full band cd, whereas Way of Abilene is stripped down, unvarnished solo acoustic songs, sometimes versions of the same song that appeared on the electric album.
“San Antonio” introduces the EP with that uncomfortable phenomenon of that person we know we need to stay away from, and have every reason in the world for doing so, but, we just keep slipping up. Freight train style harmonica and an old timey acoustic guitar set-up underscore the timeless message of human imperfections when it comes to the push & pull of affairs of attraction. Or affairs with the vices of San Antonio.
“Poncho’s Lament” is his interpretation of Tom Waits’ tribute to missing someone “coffee stains on the paper I’m writing and I’m too choked up to speak… I’m glad that you’re gone, but I wish, dear Lord, you’d come home.” On “Stillwater” there’s a roadtrip of signposts the protagonist will follow to find his one true love, over strummed acoustic guitar and a heartfelt sentiment.
On Way of Abilene, Danny Vago connects with his listener with his sincere songs of life’s contradictions and longings. Danny is on vocals, guitar, piano, and harmonica. The album was recorded at Hidden Tracks Studios in Omaha, Nebraska. It was engineered, mixed, mastered by Jeremy Garrett and also mastered by Doug Van Sloun at Focus Mastering, with cover artwork by Danny Vago.
